What is Pilates? (Or rather, WHO?)
Pilates is a system of exercises done on a mat or with equipment like Reformers and Chairs developed by Joseph Pilates, a German fitness enthusiast born in 1883. As a child, Joseph used movement to overcome illness, eventually creating “Contrology,” a method to strengthen the mind-body connection. After moving to the U.S., he patented his equipment and opened The Pilates Universal Gymnasium in New York, where actors, boxers, and dancers practiced his method.
By the 1970s, Pilates had entered mainstream fitness. Today, it’s known for low-impact, highly focused movements that strengthen the core, improve flexibility, and promote overall body awareness—a testament to Joseph’s lasting vision.
At Pilates Brevard, we emphasize spine stability to strengthen the body from the inside out. Even small, precise movements engage the core, spine, pelvis, and shoulders, delivering powerful results quickly.
